Various Types of Locks and Keys

There are just as many different types of locksets as there are doors. Knowing the ins and outs of just one of them doesn’t help much. There are locksmiths in Chandler Heights at 24 Hour Chandler Heights Locksmith that are familiar with the many different types of locks and keys that are out there. Many people looking for a new lock don’t understand the technology by which the key is made. They generally judge the key by its outward appearance, not knowing much about the inside. How it looks on the outside doesn’t matter as much as what it is capable of doing for you from the inside. More types of locks and keys are introduced into the industry annually. Keeping up with them all and how they function can be a challenge, however, we assure you that a professional locksmith will stay on top of things to ensure they are competent in their duties.

Even though there are so many different types of locks on the market today, there are some that most people are more familiar with than others. Despite having heard of these different types of locks and keys, you may not know much about them. Here is a list of some of the most widely known types of locks and keys and how they function.

Pin Tumbler – The pin tumbler lock is one of the most commonly used types of locks. It has a very simple design and is usually installed on front, exterior doors. The teeth of the key are used as the decoder for the sequence of individual pins in the middle of the lock. They typically come in two different types, tubular and cylinder. The cylinder lock has straight pins that go inward and the tubular lock pins are set in a ring around the inner walls.

Disc Tumbler Lock – This is an improvement to the standard tumbler lock. They have slots and rotating disks and not wafers and pins. While the standard pin tumbler is a pretty simple type of lock, the disc tumbler adds another layer of protection. The teeth of the key get inside the slots from different angles and they have to fit properly in order for the lock to work. This means that this type of lock is more difficult to pick. The disc tumbler lock doesn’t use springs, which means they are suitable for freezing.

Wafer Tumbler Lock – Although more advanced than a pin tumbler the wafer is less advanced than the disc tumbler. It is designed and works very similar to the pin tumbler. Wafers are used instead of pins and it is a spring-loaded lock and comes from the top and bottom of the cylinder. Keys cut on both sides have a code, which makes it harder to compromise the lock. Picking this type of lock is possible but it doesn’t usually render the results that the burglar was hoping for. Although it can be picked with jiggers, pre-fabricated keys of different types, most burglars don’t want to go through the trouble.

Smart Locks – A smart lock works along with a smart phone or other WIFI compatible devices. This means that the person using the lock has the convenience of locking or unlocking the lock from wherever they are. The signal comes from a nearby tower that communicates with the locking mechanism inside the lock. This is one of the most popular locks being installed today due to its level of convenience.

Along with the various types of locks that are used today, there are also very commonly made keys that are made. Our locksmiths are often called upon to cut and program the following types of keys.

Transponder keys – Transponder keys are used on newer model vehicles. They enable the user to access entry into their car remotely. They don’t have to have a key installed in the door lock. They simply need to aim the key at the door and press a button to unlock the door. The transponder key has to be programmed to communicate with your vehicles system. It is unique to only your vehicle and this is what makes it difficult to break-into a car that uses a transponder key.

Deadbolts – This is practically the most common security lock that is installed. The deadbolt locks that are installed most often are the single cylinder and double cylinder locks, with the single cylinder being the most popular. This type of deadbolt only requires one key to unlock the lock; whereas, the double-cylinder deadbolt requires a lock for both sides of the lock. This can be problematic when an emergency situation should occur and both keys are unable to be found.

Padlocks – A typical padlock is the most common freestanding lock. It is easy to move from one place to another. With a standard padlock, all that is needed to unlock the lock is a key. However, there is also a combination lock, which is also a padlock. This one requires a combination that the user creates, to unlock the lock.

Knob Locks – This is the type of lock that is installed on exterior doors and is probably the most commonly known type of lock. It isn’t usually installed on its own; a deadbolt lock is usually installed alongside a knob lock. This is because the knob lock is a spring lock with the cylinder inside the knob. This means that if the knob is broken it is easy to gain access inside. This is why a deadbolt lock often accompanies it.

Regardless of the type of locks and keys that you have installed, it definitely helps to know what to look for. If you are building a new home or making some improvements to your existing home, you can always rely on our locksmiths to walk you through the process of choosing the right locks and keys for you.
